Starting out in a Home Business #1
This is the first in a series of mini-articles about starting a Home Business.
For whatever reason, you have been thinking about working from home. Surprisingly you have a lot of options; however there are also a lot of tradeoffs. The first thing you need to decide is WHAT kind of home business you want to be in. A lot of people don't think this through very well. You have to decide how much time you can devote, and if you want to sell a product, or perform a service of some kind. In other words, you have to have a PLAN for starting your home business. It's a good idea to write down some ideas and thoughts about why you want to be in a home business and what things interest you career-wise. Whatever the case, I would start out with ideas that revolve around some talent you have. Writing? Sewing? Woodworking? Talking to people? Think about your strengths and weaknesses to help guide you. Don't jump into something that sounds like a good idea but doesn't use the talents you already have; you would be amazed at how many people do this.
The reason I am pointing this out is that in a regular work environment there usually is a team of people to back each other up. Where one is weak, another is strong. In a home business, it's usually just you, so you have to focus on business ideas where your strengths can be utilized to their full potential. It doesn't do any good to try to sell products from home if you have no sales skills, for example. You can learn new skills(trust me you will be anyway), but why not use the ones you already have?
